PHYSICAL THERAPY INTENSIVE
How is the Intensive Model Different from Traditional Physical Therapy?
Our intensive therapy program is different from traditional therapy.
The intensive model structure is treatment for 2-3 hours per day, 4-5 days per week for 1-2 weeks. The time and duration of each intensive varies depending on the patient’s age, endurance, strengths/weaknesses, diagnoses and other factors.
This condensed approach to therapy aims to improve strength, endurance, balance and coordination by giving your child more opportunities to practice functional skills with proper alignment and improved motor patterns. Your therapist will create a individualized program based on the child’s current level of function and family’s goals.
This concentrated practice can help:
Build stronger movement and learning pathways in the brain
Improve motor learning and skill retention
Learn new skills more quickly
Gain confidence and independence faster
Create momentum toward meaningful functional goals
By providing frequent, focused therapy sessions, intensive therapy helps children make the most of their learning potential and can lead to meaningful progress in a shorter period of time.
What is DMI?
Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic technique used to treat children with motor delay by improving automatic postural responses and promoting progress towards developmental milestones. The goal of DMI is to provoke a specified active motor response from the child in response to defined dynamic exercises prescribed by the therapist. DMI stimulates neuroplasticity to facilitate new neuronal connections and development of motor milestones. https://dmitherapy.com/
Who would benefit from an intensive?
Children diagnosed with any type of motor delay including:
Down Syndrome
Cerebral palsy
Global developmental delay
Hypotonia
Chromosomal abnormalities/genetic disorders
Spinal cord lesions
Acquired brain injury
At risk children due to prematurity or birth trauma
“Regardless of level of cognition and extent of neurological deficit or damage, affected children benefit from DMI intervention as it pertains to stimulating neuroplasticity in the developing brain.” https://dmitherapy.com/
**This is NOT an official DMI-only intensive format. The therapist providing the intensive is trained up to DMI Introductory Level B and will be utilizing exercises and techniques learned in their training in conjunction with other therapy techniques and practices. DMI-only intensives are offered by those trained to Introductory Level C or higher.** https://courses.dmitherapy.com/practitioners
